File format

A file format describes how information is encoded using the sequential bits in a file. The specification for the file format is either open (free) or closed (proprietary).

File formats cannot be directly patented in most countries. The underlying technology however, such as innovative encoding algorithms, can be patented. Examples for this were the .mp3 and .gif file formats.
